Below you will find some great food 'substitutes'. | |
| If you don't have: | Substitute: |
| I cup of cake flour (250 ml) | 1 cup minus 2 tablespoons of all purpose flour (225 ml) |
| 1 tablespoon of cornstarch (for thickening) (15 ml) | 2 tablespoons of all purpose flour (25 ml) |
| 1 package of active dry yeast | 1 cake of compressed yeast |
| 1 cup of granulated sugar (250 ml) | 1 cup of packed brown sugar (250 ml) OR 2 cups of sifted icing sugar (500 ml) |
| 1 square of unsweetened chocolate | 3 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder (50 ml) plus 1 tablespoon of butter or margarine (15 ml) |
| 1 cup of whipping cream (250 ml), whipped | 2 cups whipped dessert topping (500 ml) |
| 1 cup of buttermilk | 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar (15 ml) plus 1/2 cup of water (125 ml) OR 1 cup of skim milk (250 ml) plus 2 teaspoons of butter or margarine (10 ml) |
| 1 cup of whole milk (250 ml) | 1/2 cup of evaporated milk (125 ml) plus 1/2 cup of water (125 ml) OR 1 cup of skim milk (250 ml) plus 2 teaspoons of butter or margarine (10 ml) |
| 1 cup of light cream (250 ml) | 2 tablespoons of butter (25 ml) plus 1 cup minus 2 tablespoons milk (225 ml) |
| 2 cups of tomato sauce (500 ml) | 3/4 cup of tomato paste (175 ml) plus 1 cup of water (250 ml) |
| 1 cup of tomato juice (250 ml) | 1/2 cup of tomato sauce (125 ml) plus 1/2 cup of water (125 ml) OR 1 cup of V8 Vegetable Cocktail (250 ml) |
| 1 clove of garlic | 1/8 teaspoon of garlic powder OR minced dry garlic (0.5 ml) |
| 1 small onion | 1 teaspoon of onion powder (5 ml) or 1 tablespoon of minced dried onion (15 ml), rehydrated |
| 1 teaspoon of dry mustard (5 ml) | 1 tablespoon of prepared mustard (15 ml) |
| 1 teaspoon finely shredded lemon peel (5 ml) | 1/2 teaspoon of lemon extract (2 ml) |
